Fish Leather, Books & Seaweed

On Wednesday, February 18th, I participated in the Oregon Blue Foods Forum: Seafare Symposium alongside Kelley Roy, founder of Art Design Xchange, and other ADX members to highlight the workshops featured at the Ocean Arts Xperience on February 19th.

During the event, I conducted demonstrations on crafting with fish leather and bookmaking, giving attendees a glimpse into the creative techniques explored in the upcoming workshops.

I learned a lot about ocean conservation and sustainability in the blue foods industry. Products like fish leather, cosmetics, and kelp fabric help reduce waste.

The next day on Wednesday, February 19th, I led a hands-on bookmaking workshop at the Ocean Arts Xperience, where participants had the unique opportunity to work with fish leather as a primary material.

Throughout the session, attendees learned fundamental bookbinding techniques, including stitching methods and cover assembly, while also gaining an appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in working with unconventional materials.

As they constructed their books, they experimented with various creative approaches to designing closures for the fish leather covers, incorporating elements such as wraps, ties, and handmade fastenings.

The workshop fostered a spirit of innovation, allowing participants to explore both functional and artistic aspects of bookbinding in a supportive and inspiring environment.
